Glyn Johns

Glyn Thomas Johns is a legendary English recording engineer and record producer, renowned for his pioneering contributions to rock music. With a career spanning more than five decades, Johns has worked with some of the most iconic acts in rock history, including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Eagles, Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, and The Clash. His innovative approach to recording has made him a defining figure in the music industry.

Born in London, Glyn Johns began his career in the early 1960s and quickly rose to prominence as one of the most influential engineers of the 1960s and 1970s. He became one of the first independent British engineers to operate freelance, working outside of the traditional studio system. This allowed him to collaborate with numerous legendary artists and produce some of the most important albums of the era, including The Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed, The Who’s Who’s Next, and Led Zeppelin’s eponymous debut album.

One of Johns' most notable contributions to the art of recording is his development of the "Glyn Johns method" of recording drums, a technique that emphasizes a natural, live sound. This method became a hallmark of his approach, valuing the energy and authenticity of live performances captured in the studio. Johns' technique and philosophy set him apart from many of his contemporaries, influencing a generation of engineers and producers.

Johns also played a crucial role in the Beatles’ Get Back sessions, which were eventually released as the Let It Be album. His engineering work during these sessions was pivotal in capturing the raw, unpolished sound of the band during their final years together.

Throughout the 1960s and 1980s, Johns was instrumental in creating some of the most influential records in rock history, working with artists from a range of genres, including Steve Miller Band, The Band, and Small Faces. His work continued into the 1980s and beyond, maintaining his reputation as one of the premier engineers and producers in the music business.

In addition to his remarkable engineering career, Johns is also a solo artist, recording and releasing music of his own. He is the father of Ethan Johns and the older brother of the late Andy Johns, both of whom followed in his footsteps to become well-known producers and engineers in their own right.

In recognition of his lasting impact on the music industry, Glyn Johns was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, receiving the Award for Musical Excellence. His legacy continues to inspire engineers, producers, and musicians around the world.
